Jesus died on the cross for all our sins. The day we ask Jesus Christ into our hearts - is just the beginning of our journey into living a Christ-centered life. Imagine you're given your graduation diploma on your very FIRST day of school - this is similar to God's grace in allowing us keys to the kingdom 'just by' asking his son, Jesus Christ, into our hearts. However, our journey does not / should not stop there - it is only just beginning. We then have the opportunity to follow a Holy Spirit-led life into victorious living. In beginning each day saying 'God, I follow your lead today.' Now we begin the process of reading His word, meditating on it, and living a life that He intended us to lead. It's a wonderful experience you don't want to miss.
Why the name Bible-Butter? When you first sit down with the Bible it seems old and dry -> I felt if I just had some 'butter' to make it slide into my soul like buttering your toast at breakfast that I could tackle it. I have spent the better part of five years doing just that. Attacking my reading of the Bible with persistence and devotion. After a lot of starting, stopping and some frustration, I have tried to put my personal experience of how I approached getting into reading the Bible, here, for you to use or possibly even add to.
The below will take you through an assortment of resources to help energize and encourage you to read the Bible:
1) Five Helpful Resources; 2) Which Bible?; 3) Making a Plan; 4) PB&J; 5) Video Encouragement; 6) The Books of the Bible; 7) How Bible Books are Grouped
There are many Bibles to choose from -> formal Bibles (word-for-word, ex: King James Version (KJV)) all the way to the other end of the spectrum, which are paraphrased Bibles (thought-for-thought which can be easier to read, ex: The Message).
As you can see in the Bible translations above - you really have a wide range to choose from. If you want to come by Bible-butter downtown Poteau, I have NIV (New Int'l Version) and ICB (which is not even mentioned) available free. What is ICB? International Children's Bible - I have no shame in my game - I literally had to get a children's Bible to be able to comprehend most of the text.
;-) You're the only one standing in your way at digging into God's life-giving Word.
The first time I read the Bible I just went left to right, yes, Genesis to Revelation and it took me about a year and a half. I had moments of excitement in reading (like I couldn't wait to get home to read), thennnnnn I'd have moments of frustration (The book of Numbers! Fuhgeddaboudit). Sometimes I'd have to take a breather and come at it from a different angle (again, this is when bibleproject.com certainly came to my rescue to give me a clue what was going on in books/ chapters).
You're going to get frustrated, you're bound to get bored - but this is truly the most important thing in your life in understanding and relating to God. Just like there's more than one way to skin a cat, there's more than one way to get the Bible read. Reach out to me for ideas; form a small group of like minded people; heck, when I traveled - I would find a local Bible Study in that area and attend to meet new people and to keep kindling my interest. God just wants you to show up - He'll do the rest.
I just thought of how that's literally Prayer, Bible and Jesus - seriously that just sums it up, right? When you pray before you crack open the Bible - I think it softens your heart and head and centers you for what you're getting ready to read. Have you ever read and reread the same sentence or paragraph 5 times or more? I've been there more times than I can mention, but I wasn't going to let the devil distract me out of the blessing of reading the Bible. Remember, if the devil can't make you bad, he'll make you busy (in other words, distract you to the max!).
Also, when you read I think the Holy Spirit absorbs what you're reading, so it is nourishing your soul even when you feel like you're getting nothing out of it.
John 14:26
. . . the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
For me, I had to find a person that spoke to where I was currently - I knew the 10 Commandments but that was about it. I humbly suggest someone like Joyce Meyer, free on YouTube, to start getting you going in the right direction. For a few years, I would wake up, fix my coffee and breakfast and sit down before work and just listen to one of her sermons. This started charting the course for my personal direction change before I even began to read the Bible.
Modern take on Biblical principles, she loves to talk to the 'single as a pringle' folks :-)
Her humorous southern drawl and contemporary approach helped me absorb some hard to understand parts of the Bible
Family . . . this is a bonus segment on family . . . this episode is foundational, plain and simple
JMC is one of my favorites. I am pretty sure I have watched everything he has been a part of on youtube. I appreciate his humor, not only scriptural references but quoting authors across the globe and eras. Additionally, he has written books and has developed "Practicing the Way" series (www.practicingtheway.org) which I enjoy
Previously a drug dealer in Queens, NY - he came to Christ 20+ years ago. He's intense, he's genuine and he is urgently trying to fulfill the great commission (Matthew 28:19). He is my current favorite, I am trying to watch everything he has done on Youtube
A couple of public figures who have given their lives to Christ
Note where he says "I thought that I knew what was in the Bible even without reading it" ->
oh, so me (Ouch!)
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1st & 2nd Samuel, 1st & 2nd Kings, 1st & 2nd Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther
Job, Psalm, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi
Matthew*, Mark, Luke, John --> Acts is a continuation of Luke and involves the Holy Spirit being on the scene - picture Jesus resurrecting and going up into Heaven and the Holy Spirit coming down to take His place if you will.
Romans, 1st & 2nd Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1st & 2nd Thessalonians, 1st & 2nd Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1st & 2nd Peter, 1st & 2nd & 3rd John, Jude, Revelation
Matthew is interestingly put as the linchpin between the Old & New Testament - Matthew's purpose is to connect the prophets (those 17 books) prophesying the coming of Christ 400 years ago and then displaying through the book of Matthew the 'fruition' of what was previously prophesied. Like 'ta da!' here He is - we told you He was coming (and how, and where, and why) . . . pretty cool, right?
This goes with the area above - it's a video explaining the portions of the Bible. You realize the book names of the Bible has to do with the info included in that section (see, I didn't even know that until I started digging in!). :-)
